I went to work jetlagged from Morocco. My last living grandparent died. My boyfriend of 3 years broke up with me.
This year, today: I worked on a new Huffington Post blog post. I finished a post on my regular blog. I edited recipes for my book. I went to dinner with my mom in Korea town. I packed for San Francisco tomorrow. I made dumplings from leftover dumpling class stuff. I ate some of them.

Lung cancer, great. Show me a brilliant writer and I’ll show you a chimney-head. Will have to re-read “Pigeon Feathers and Other Stories,” that book made me cry.

Food has eaten my life
Just got back from DC late last night and today has been the roughest in terms with catching up with what is going on/what has happened and needs finishing up/what is going to happen and needs to be done. I have cards that I don’t remember who/what/where. Trouble sleeping even though I got little sleep lately. In an attempt to regroup I thought it therapeutic to publicly retrace my steps and...

Louise Erdrich reads at BAM
→
FfFffFFfffffFF! Louise Erdrich is one of my favorite living writers ever since I started really liking to read, which begs the question of whether it was her work that did that, and although I usually fall asleep or at least space out at reading events, this dinner/reading at BAM for only $50 tomorrow night is killing me because I can’t go. (You should.)

Cupcakes Take the Cake is a great blog and I’m nominating them, as well as myself (you have to enter three blogs per category when you nominate). So go ahead and do the same if you’d like, too! (My blog is www.noteatingoutinny.com. It’s okay.)

The Freakonomics co-author writes a blog post comparing the Santa-dressed Christmas gunman who shot his ex and friends with the Muslim family who was kicked off an AirTran flight because people thought their conversation sounded suspicious, concluding that often, the closest people to us are the ones to be feared, while “strangers” are not so great a threat as supposed. While this...

It appears Ben & Jerry’s is not fond of the short “a” pronunciation of “pecan.” Or, butter.

I'm beard blind
I’ve realized it once or twice before that I don’t realize it when people have beards. (i.e.: “Oh, you mean your friend with the beard?” “No.” And then of course the friend in question indeed has a Herculean hairmask.)
So when I saw a photo of Mayur in this article I thought — whoa, that must have been a helluva long time ago. Nope. Saw him both before...

notes on New Year's
This was I think the first New Year’s Eve when I didn’t kiss anyone since 2004. But that part doesn’t really matter. This was the best New Year’s Eve since maybe 2006 because it was spent with lovable people, with no drama to speak of other than lots of fun. I appreciate that something as meaningless as the turning of a certain day in the calendar system we created can inspire such celebration in...
